How to find a book

Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)

Using subject headings can provide a more refined search. Political Science is the obvious primary subheading. However, some others provide more specific results:

Library of Congress Call Numbers (LCCN)

Library of Congress Call Numbers are an alphanumeric code that allow for the organization of related resources within the same shelf space.  Books relating to political topics most commonly appear in in the "J" located on Level 3 of the Library.  However, depending on your topic, you may find items in other areas such as History (C-F), Military (U), etc.

The Political Science section further divides into several key areas, most commonly by region:

  • Theory (JC)
  • North America (JJ-JL)
  • Europe (JN)
  • Asia, Australia, Africa, etc. (JQ)
  • International Relations (JZ)
