What is Mendeley?

Mendeley is a reference/citation manager with web-based, desktop, and mobile versions. You can sync your citation library between these different versions and across different devices.

New web, desktop app and citation tool

Mendeley Reference Manager simplifies the process of adding and using your references. The Mendeley Cite tool allows you to easily insert in-text citations and bibliographies / references in documents created with Microsoft Word 2016 and above, Microsoft Office 365 and Online, and the Microsoft Word app for iPad.

Get stared with the Mendeley Reference Manager: A Guide for New Users (pdf) or check out the Mendeley Help Guides page for:

Note: The old(er) Desktop app and Citation Plugin are still available for those using pre-2016 versions of Microsoft Word on the desktop.

Database changes as of January 31, 2021

In order to meet our budget targets, the Library is ending our subscription to the Institutional Edition package of Mendeley. We expect this change to only impact a handful of users. You will always be able to access your Mendeley account because Mendeley.com has always been a free service.

Library staff will continue to support faculty, students and staff who use Mendeley as their bibliographic citation tracker and the Mendeley desktop and app for creating in-text citations and reference lists in MS Word.

What will change once the library’s premium, Mendeley Institutional Edition (MIE) subscription ends on 1/31/2021? Each individual Mendeley account will be allowed:

  • To use any email address you wish (versus using your Webster email to create your account)
  • Five (5) private groups (versus unlimited with MIE)
  • 2GB of personal storage space on Mendeley (versus 100 GB)
  • 100 MB of shared storage space (versus 100 GB)

To view your current usage details, log into https://mendeley.com, click on the down arrow next to your name in the upper right corner, and select ‘Settings & Privacy.’ From there, select ‘Subscription’ on the left. If you find that you will be impacted by these changes, please let Holly Hubenschmidt know at hollyh@webster.edu by December 22, 2020.
