Juneteenth is the celebration of the effectual end of Slavery in the United States of America. A combination of June Nineteenth, it recalls the reading in Galveston Texas of the proclamation of General Order Number 3 freeing all slaves.
Starting with the banning of the Atlantic Slave Trade in 1808, African Americans have constructed a number of festivals and celebrations marking various milestones on the road to freedom, culminating in the Juneteenth celebrations.
