Search Strategies

  • When searching in the database, identify key terms to create strong searches. For example, if you are doing a paper on how organizations raise money use Nongovernmental Organizations and fundraising.
  • Use truncation and other techniques to create effective searches.   Truncation is the use of symbols to search variations on a particular word.  For example in the search noted above, you can expand your search by using Nongovernmental Organizations and fund*. The truncated version of "fund" will pick up funding, funds and fundraising in one search.
  • Use the features in the database to broaden and narrow searches such as searching full-text (broader), specific date ranges (narrower), specific types of publications, etc.
