Search Strategies

  • When searching in the database, identify key terms to create strong searches.  For example, if you are doing a paper on how water shortages affect food production in Ethiopia, you might set up a a search like Ethiopia AND agriculture AND irrigation
  • Use truncation and other techniques to create effective searches.   Truncation is the use of symbols to search variations on a particular word.  For example in the search noted above, you could change to Ethiopia* AND agricultur* and irrigat*  which would pull up variations on your original terms such as Ethiopian, agricultural, and irrigates/irrigated.
  • Use the features in the database to broaden and narrow searches such as searching full-text (broader), specific date ranges (narrower), specific types of publications, etc.
